Hammertoes

Hammertoes are a common foot deformity that occurs when one or more of your toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, creating a curled or claw-like appearance. This condition typically affects the second, third, or fourth toes and can cause discomfort, pain, or difficulty wearing shoes.

Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery. People with hammertoe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes.

What to Know

About Hammertoes

Causes

Several factors can contribute to the development of hammertoes, including:

  • Improper Footwear: Shoes that are too tight, narrow, or high-heeled can force the toes into unnatural positions over time.

  • Muscle Imbalance: Imbalances between the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that hold the toe straight can lead to hammertoe formation.

  • Injury or Trauma: A previous toe injury may result in deformities.

  • Genetics: Some people are predisposed to hammertoes due to inherited foot structure.

  • Medical Conditions: Arthritis, diabetes, or neuromuscular disorders can increase the risk of developing hammertoes.
Symptoms
  • A bent or curled appearance of one or more toes.

  • Pain or irritation, especially when wearing shoes.

  • Redness, swelling, or inflammation around the affected toe joint.

  • Corns or calluses on the top of the toe or between toes.

  • Limited movement or stiffness in the affected toe.
Treatment Options

We offer a range of treatments to address hammertoes and alleviate discomfort:

Conservative Treatments

Footwear Modifications: Wearing shoes with a wide toe box and low heels can help reduce pressure on the toes.

Orthotic Devices: Custom orthotics can correct muscle imbalances and relieve pain.

Padding or Splints: Protect sensitive areas and keep toes in a straighter position.

Physical Therapy: Exercises to stretch and strengthen toe muscles.

Medications: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can reduce pain and swelling.

Surgical Options
In severe cases, when conservative treatments don’t provide relief, surgical intervention may be necessary. Procedures can straighten the toe, remove damaged tissue, or realign the joint to improve function and appearance.
